GATES LEARNING MAPS

2014-2015 School Year

Report

"In a given course of study there is a set of domain-specific knowledge, skills, and dispositions that we will call the “competency space.” A teacher generally chunks this space up into discrete learning nodes and offers learning opportunities for each node. We will call the set of learning opportunities the “opportunity space.” In a traditional classroom, students have a fixed scope (available opportunities,) a fixed sequence (order of opportunities,) and a fixed pace (time schedule to access opportunities.) Personalized learning requires that students have an open scope, alternative sequences, and individual pace."
