Learning Impact

Building learning impact models for content on Nickelodeon's Noggin platform with Kevin Miklasz.

Thinking time and reaction time are two different measures of time-on-task in digital learning platforms, and how response time is measured makes a difference in the subsequent machine learning algorithms.

Decision trees of player performance and reaction time across items on the platform indicate a non-linear pattern with five reaction time performance groups: blind guesser; quick and more correct; less quick and less correct; slow and more correct; and more slow and less correct.

Designing digital content for learning should take item difficulty into consideration. Items should not be too easy nor too hard to maximize engagement. Items that kids get correct 50-80% of the time seem to land in the preferred range.

A learning impact grid was defined by two measures of directional evidence of learning. One had to do with level gain on repeat play and the other had to do with a significant increase in percent correct for same-level players on repeat play. Given how correlated level gain is with content difficulty, it was important for us to have a second metric to control for content difficulty.
